Training Sessions

The following is a list of our scheduled training sessions and workshops. All training sessions are held in the Sladen Library Training Room located on the 17th floor of Henry Ford Hospital. To see our full schedule in calendar view, go to https://henryford.libcal.com/calendar/sladentraining. 

Classes are free and open to all Henry Ford Health medical staff, employees, and affiliated students. Registration is required. Check back often as new sessions will be added regularly.

EndNote Basics

This hands-on class will provide you with the information you need to begin working with the reference management software EndNote. EndNote 21 and Word 2016 will be used in the class. The session will cover:

  • Creating libraries
  • Exporting references from various library databases
  • Importing references into EndNote
  • Manually creating references
  • Using EndNote within Word documents

EndNote Advanced

This hands-on class will provide you with the advanced skills needed to utilize EndNote to its full potential. EndNote 21 and Word 2016 will be used in the class. The session will cover:

  • Organizing references into groups and smart groups
  • Finding full-text articles for EndNote references
  • Editing output styles
  • Additional advanced skills

Finding Evidence-Based Answers

This training session will review how to formulate a question for searching the literature and how to quickly and efficiently find evidence-based answers to clinical questions. This session will also provide an overview of evidence-based medicine and an introduction to the evidence-based resources available from the Sladen Library.

Steps to Journal Article Publishing

Are you working on a manuscript and want to know more about how to get it ready for submission to a journal? Are you new to the article publishing process and want to learn more? Then this is the class for you! The session will cover:

  • How to find and select a journal for your manuscript
  • How to locate journal requirements for different types of articles
  • An overview of the formatting and reference styles used by most medical journals
  • Other submission requirements such as cover letters, disclosure statements, author rights, and figure requirements

PubMed Basics

This class provides an introduction to the basics of Medline searching using the new PubMed interface. This hands-on class will cover:

  • Keyword and simple searching
  • Advanced searching
  • Applying limits to search results
  • Locating full-text articles

PubMed Advanced

This class will focus on the advanced aspects of searching Medline using the new PubMed interface. The session will cover:

  • Utilizing Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and subheadings in searches
  • Setting up a MyNCBI account
  • Saving searches
  • Creating email alerts
  • Using the Clinical Queries feature

Systematic Reviews: The Basics

This session will provide users with an introduction to systematic reviews and the steps involved in carrying one out. The session will cover:

  • What a systematic review is and compare/contrast them to narrative reviews
  • How to find systematic reviews
  • What are the standard guidelines for conducting a systematic review
  • How to develop the review question and protocol
  • What are some common pitfalls to avoid when conducting a systematic review
