Journals: All About Journals and Full Text: Impact Factors

This guide contains information about accessing the electronic and print journals at the Sladen Library. Use this guide to also learn about retrieving full text articles from databases, journal metrics, and alerting services.

Journal Impact Factors

Journal impact factors come from the Journal Citation Reports® (JCR) published by Clarivate Analytics. Impact factors are a tool for evaluating journals. They measure the frequency an "average article" in a journal has been cited within a particular time period.

Impact factors are calculated using 3 years worth of data, therefore brand new journals will not have official impact factors. Furthermore, only journals tracked by Clarivate Analytics will have official impact factors.

To search for journal impact factors on JCR:

1.  Visit the Web of Science database from the Sladen Library website.
2.  Click on Products in the upper right hand corner, then Journal Citation Reports in the drop down.

JCR can be searched by journal title, browsed by category or view a complete list of the over 11,000 journals included. There is a tool that can be used to compare journals as well.

TIPS

  • When searching for a specific title, you may get the return saying "no matching results found."  If you are certain there is such a journal title, check the list of "full journal titles" to see how the title is indexed in JCR.
