Celebrate National Library Week!

In 2021, April 4-10th marks the annual celebration of National Library Week. Sponsored by the American Library Association, National Library Week (NLW) is a time to celebrate our nation’s libraries, support their workers, and promote library usage.

This National Library Week is particularly special for the Sladen Library. Over the course of the past year, we have been able to provide our patrons with a completely updated and remodeled space fit for the 21st-century library user! In addition, while Sladen Library was physically closed last spring due to the Covid-19 lockdown, we were able to maintain our high level of service by providing those services remotely. Library services like literature searching, document delivery, manuscript preparation, online resources, systematic review consultation, and reference services all continued seamlessly, and even flourished. When our doctors, nurses, and healthcare staff were dealing with the absolute worst every day, we knew that the library wouldn’t be foremost in their thoughts; but we remained ready and available to provide quality information and assistance whenever called upon.

How libraries have adapted during the pandemic illustrates the service nature of library work. Many public libraries have adjusted their service models to provide curbside pickup of library books, free wifi hotspots, or virtual versions of traditionally in-person programming, like children’s story time. The false stereotype of the stodgy, shushing librarian is being countered everyday by the reality of savvy, innovative, and caring library workers in all types of libraries and roles.

So during National Library Week, show some love for your library–be it your school library, your local public library, or the Sladen Library! We are here to help!
