Designing a Professional Poster

Follow the Conference's Instructions

Pay close attention to the poster guidelines provided by the conference. These guidelines will determine the size, format, and possibly, the material of your final poster. The conference instructions will also specify what will be provided for you (or what you need to bring) for hanging and/or displaying your poster at the event - such as pins, clips, etc.

Display space is not the same as your poster size. Be sure to check the conference’s guidelines to see how much space you will be allotted and/or if specific poster dimensions are required.

Using PowerPoint for Your Template

PowerPoint is often used to create a poster. This is done by essentially creating the poster on a single slide that will be blown up to your poster size when printed. To set your poster size in PowerPoint:

  1. In the top toolbar click on the Design tab
  2. Slide Size
  3. Custom Slide Size

  1. Set the width and height of your poster in inches. For example, a 4x3 ft poster should be set to 48in width x 36in height.
  2. Make sure slide is set to Landscape orientation

Set the slide size first so all the other elements are correctly sized in the final printout!

Content is placed on a PowerPoint template using Text Boxes. To insert a text box:

  1. In the top toolbar click on the Insert tab
  2. Text Box
  3. Using your cursor, click within the poster and drag to create a box approximately the size you will need
  4. Click within the box to add text

You can easily change the size of the text box by clicking its edge and dragging to desired size.

Right-clicking on the border of the box will bring up tools to edit the box size, border, color, etc.
