You saw an interesting patient and you wrote up a case report, but now what? Which journals accept case reports? What are their requirements? And where can you turn to for help?
One potential option is BMJ Case Reports. Sladen Library has an institutional fellowship that Henry Ford Health System authors can use to submit to BMJ Case Reports at no cost. (BMJ Case Reports usually charges authors an individual fellowship fee of £225 per year.) Please contact Stephanie Stebens (ssteben1@hfhs.org or 313-916-2550) for our institutional fellowship number, which will need to be inputted during the manuscript submission process.
BMJ Case Reports accepts case reports, images, and global health cases. Full cases have a recommended limit of 2,000 words and must be submitted using BMJ Case Reports’ template. Case reports have a maximum limit of four authors.
Keep in mind that BMJ Case Reports requires patient consent for case reports: "For living patients this is a legal requirement and we will not send your article for review without explicit consent from the patient or guardian. If the patient is dead the UK Data Protection Act does not apply, but the authors must seek permission from a relative (ideally the next of kin)." The journal prefers that authors use their consent form.
BMJ Case Reports is indexed in PubMed/Medline, as well as Embase, Scopus, and Google Scholar. For 2018, their acceptance rate was 61%; time from submission to first decision was 59 days; and time from acceptance to publication was 17 days.
Please contact Stephanie Stebens if you have any questions about BMJ Case Reports or questions about getting a case report published. Also, make sure that you take advantage of Sladen Library's manuscript preparation service, which can assist you with preparing your manuscript according to a specific journal’s requirements.
