Patient Education Information Beyond Epic

by Unknown User on 2018-10-02T14:59:00-04:00 in Consumer Health, Core Medical Databases | 0 Comments

Epic has an excellent source for patient education and handouts powered by the HealthWise database. There may be instances however, when additional information is required. Here are some excellent sources provided by the Sladen Library. These resources require HFHS ID and password authentication from outside the health system and are located in the Quick Links box on the Sladen homepage. Most of these tools are also available in languages other than English.

DynaMed is a point-of-care, evidence-based product that has patient education handouts within topic or medical condition.

Clinical Key is a search engine and database that includes articles, books, images, guidelines, etc. The patient education tools are accessible from the main page drop-down menu and include medication information as well.

Up-To-Date is another point-of-care, evidence-based database. The tab for patient education articles is found at the top of the homepage.

Clinical Pharmacology has patient education handouts that are easily accessible from the homepage.

Micromedex “CareNotes” or patient education articles are under a tab along the top of the homepage.

There are also some good free sites on the Internet for patient education, but remember to consider the source. Here are a few reputable websites for health information.

MedlinePlus, https://medlineplus.gov/

CDC, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, https://www.cdc.gov/

Mayo Clinic, https://www.mayoclinic.org/

In addition, the Sladen Library publishes a Consumer/Patient Health subject guide that is closely curated by a librarian.

October is National Medical Librarians Month. If you have any additional questions about health information, you know who to call!
