Were you ever curious about the degree abbreviations following your Henry Ford Health System librarian’s name? Just like other professions, those letters represent the advanced degrees and certifications held by that individual.
The degree required of the librarians working in the Henry Ford libraries is a master’s degree – a graduate degree for information professionals. This advanced degree goes by several names. The most common are Masters of Science in Library Science (MSLS) and Masters in Library and Information Science (MLIS). In either case, the graduate degree typically requires two years of coursework in a range of topics, including reference work, information and data management, web design, and digital libraries. The degree prepares HFHS librarians to help others with the challenges of the digital age and the massive online resources being created.
In addition to their professional library degree, some Henry Ford librarians hold other degrees. For example, a couple of HFHS librarians started their careers in other fields and so have credentials such as an RN degree, a Masters in History, and even a JD.
Another designation that has been received by many HFHS Librarians is the “AHIP” credential, which stands for the Academy of Health Information Professionals. Membership in this group is awarded to health science librarians who complete a program of on-going professional development and career accomplishments. Conferred by the Medical Library Association, the AHIP credential recognizes a librarian’s professional qualifications and commitment to the profession.
The Henry Ford Health System librarians have many years of experience in the health science library field. Their mission is to connect you to the best evidence available as you conduct your research and care for HFHS patients.
