Have you ever looked at an online holiday/event calendar? If you have, you’d know that July has quite a lot going on: National Watermelon Month, National Family Reunion Month, National Wild About Wildlife Month, National Park and Recreation Month, and many more that go hand-in-hand with a month known for fun in the sun. July is also National Sarcoma Awareness Month—much less fun, but vital to the prevention of this rare but deadly disease.
What is Sarcoma, you ask? Sarcoma is cancer that can develop in the muscle, bone, nerves, cartilage, tendons, blood vessels and fat.
Although there are more than fifty different types of sarcomas, it is a relatively rare form of cancer, effecting an estimated 13,460 people in the United States this year. It is such a rare cancer that it is often referred to as the “forgotten” cancer.
To bring awareness to this little-known cancer, National Sarcoma Awareness Month was born. The awareness month began in 2007, when a group of activists created a national month dedicated to sarcoma awareness. It is now an international event held by a number of advocacy groups. On July 21, a virtual advocacy day encourages you to spread sarcoma awareness through social media and other online networks.
Sladen has information on sarcoma that you can use to keep yourself informed of this often forgotten, but often deadly disease.
