A guide to help you get articles and books that you need.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions about ILLiad at Sladen Library

Who can use ILLiad?

ILLiad is available to Henry Ford Hospital and Health Network, West Bloomfield, and HAP physicians and employees. Henry Ford Macomb, Wyandotte, and Jackson physicians and employees should continue to use their local hospital libraries.

What is ILLiad?

ILLiad is the electronic system you use to request an item that the library does not own.

How do I order an article or book?

A request form to order a book or article can be found in your ILLiad account. Article requests can also be submitted directly from all of our databases. Look for the "Find It @ Sladen" button to order from ILLiad. The request form will be automatically filled out for you-just click the submit button.

Why do I need a username and password to use ILLiad?

Your username and password allows you access to your personal account, anywhere, any time.

Why do I have to use my HFHS username and password?

Our service is limited to HFHS employees. You do not need a special username and password to access ILLiad. Rather, you just use your normal HFHS network username and password. The same username and password you use for EPIC and Outlook email (without the "@hfhs.org" in your username).

What if I do not have an HFHS username and password?

Some people associated with HFHS lack network credentials. If you fall into that rare group, for example you are a student, a private physician, or you work in a department that does not use HFHS Outlook email, then complete the Sladen Library Registration Form. We will email you a Sladen-specific username and password within one business day.

What if I forget my password?

Call the IT Help Desk at 248-853-4900 and ask them to reset your HFHS password. If you have a special non-HFHS account with the library, call the Sladen Library Document Services at 313-916-2550, Monday through Friday, between 8:30a-4:00p. We can reset your password allowing you access to ILLiad.

Is there a fee for this service?

There is no fee. There is a limit of 50 item requests per month. Exceptions can be made for appropriate circumstances.

Is security a problem if I use a public workstation?

Yes. Web browsers cache information and create a history file on the local workstation. This allows a subsequent user of the workstation to access the system under your name using the browser's Back button to recall a page from the cache, or by finding a page with your personal information in the browser's history file. If you are concerned about the security of your interlibrary loan requests, you can take the following steps:

  • Access ILLiad only from your personal computer or an otherwise secure workstation.
  • Access ILLiad from a public workstation in the Interlibrary Loan office in the library. These computers are supervised by the library staff.
  • When using a public access workstation:
    1. Delete from the history file those pages that contain your personal information.
    2. Exit from the Web browser before you leave the workstation. This prevents the Back button from accessing the pages you were using.

How long will my articles remain in my account?

Article PDFs will remain for 30 days only. Please save articles that you want to keep elsewhere.

I received an email that my articles have been delivered, but I cannot find them. Where are they?

Click on "Received Articles". Your articles will be there in PDF format.

Help! I need my article right away.

No problem, just add a rush comment in the Notes field along with your need-by date or call Sladen Library Document Services, 313-916-2550, to let us know.

Does ILLiad keep my order history?

Yes, your ordering history will be kept in your account.

What is electronic delivery?

Your article request will be sent to you as a PDF file via email.

Who do I contact if I have problems with or questions about ILLiad?

Contact Sladen Library Document Services at 313-916-2550 or email docsvs@hfhs.org.

Can I get a textbook for a class?

If you are requesting a textbook for a class, please note that it may take a few weeks to arrive and the lending library assigns the due date. We ask that you cancel or let us know if you decide to buy the book instead. Also, the library will only loan a book for about a month and may or may not allow a renewal. You may need to submit another request to get a copy from another library.

Why does my browser say that you're sending a cookie? What's in it?

The technology that we use sends a Session ID to be stored on your machine. You can refuse this cookie and still be able to use ILLiad without any problems.
